Number One is Stuart Balmer



This week we spoke to our friend Ben about his life in South London and you can listen to that here.
While talking about his memories of watching Charlton Athletic Ben mentioned seeing an outfield player wearing number 1 on the back of his shirt.
Further investigations have revealed this to be former Addick's defender Stuart Balmer and the reason being that the squad numbers were handed out in alphabetical order.
Balmer became the first outfield player to wear the number 1 shirt in English football.
